The ad that sold adventure, not a product

Ernest Shackleton’s famous recruitment ad read:
‘Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.’

No image. No logo. Just truth.

It drew a remarkable response.

It worked because it offered meaning rather than comfort.

That is the heart of great communication. The best copy does not flatter the reader. It calls them to something they already believe in.
