Contrarian Statements Sell
One of the quickest ways to break through the clutter is to say something that contradicts what people believe.
“You can exercise without effort.” Absurd? Yes. That’s exactly why it works.
When an idea runs counter to conventional wisdom, it stops people mid-scroll. Their brain doesn’t know what to do with it, so they keep reading to make sense of it. That moment of confusion is where the magic happens.
Ogilvy did this with DOVE making soap old-fashioned. Sugarman did it by showing that learning to fight doesn’t require years of training. Schwartz did it with the promise that you could lose weight by blowing out candles on an imaginary cake.
The rule: if everyone’s saying one thing, say the opposite. But make sure you can back it up. The contradiction gets attention. The proof gets the sale.
